The table is set, the candles are lit, and the smell of freshly baked bread wafts from the kitchen. More and more often, people’s own homes are once again becoming gathering places for friends and family. The elaborately staged dinner party now has some competition …
For a long time, the rule was: If you invite guests over, you have to offer them something. An elaborate meal, a perfectly decorated table, and—ideally—an apartment that looks as if it had just been photographed for an interior design magazine. But that image is changing. Instead of formal dinner parties, laid-back evenings with friends are making a comeback. A few good ingredients, a beautifully set table, and people you enjoy spending time with… Often, that’s all it takes.
This newfound enthusiasm for entertaining is changing the way we view our own homes. Living spaces are once again being designed more consciously as places for socializing. The dining table takes center stage, atmospheric lighting becomes more important, and when it comes to decorating, the question that matters most is: Just how cozy is it here for our guests?
A Stress-Free Dinner Party: The “Perfect Dinner” Is a Thing of the Past
It doesn’t always have to be a fancy three-course meal. Pasta served in a big bowl, a few candles on the table, a good bottle of wine—and suddenly it’s midnight. The meal can certainly be simple; after all, the host or hostess should also get to enjoy the evening and not have to stress out three days before the event.
Dishes that can be prepared in advance are especially handy for a relaxed dinner party: a one-pot meal, roasted vegetables, casseroles, braised dishes, or a dessert in a glass.
The best part is: the less effort we put in, the more relaxed the atmosphere often becomes. No one has to disappear into the kitchen for hours while the guests are already seated at the table. Instead, everyone might even chop, plate, and pour drinks together.
The so-called “sharing” concept also fits perfectly with this new form of hospitality. Many small dishes are placed in the center of the table, and everyone helps themselves, tastes the food, and shares it. This fosters a sense of closeness and, as a bonus, provides topics for conversation.

The Right Lighting for a Cozy Dinner Party
What turns an ordinary dining area into a particularly cozy space? Often, it’s the lighting.
You can feel free to leave the overhead light and bright spotlights off for an evening with guests. Instead, several small light sources create a warm, inviting atmosphere. A table lamp on the sideboard, soft lighting in a corner, and candles on the dining table instantly make the room feel cozier.
Warm white, indirect light with a color temperature of about 2,700 Kelvin creates a particularly cozy atmosphere. Dimmable lights are practical here: The light can be a little brighter during dinner, and then dimmed later.
Here’s a tip: Candles of varying heights and small table lamps create a lively lighting atmosphere at your dinner party. The only important thing is that guests can still see each other clearly.
Dinner Party Decor: The Table as the Centerpiece
The dining table is gaining a newfound appreciation. It’s where we eat, talk, laugh, and sometimes stay up late into the night. Its design deserves just as much attention.
Tables that are set to reflect personality look especially beautiful. A linen tablecloth, for example, provides a calm backdrop for colorful napkins, vintage glasses, and modern tableware. A mix of materials and shapes gives the table a unique character. Feel free to experiment with colors, too: a bold blue, rich red, or warm yellow adds exciting accents.
In between, there’s room for small vases of flowers, seasonal twigs, and pretty little bowls filled with olives, roasted nuts, or other snacks. This creates a welcoming and wonderfully casual atmosphere.
Comfortable seating is just as important as a beautiful table setting. Anyone who has ever spent several hours on a hard dining chair knows how quickly comfort suffers. Upholstered chairs, a bench with cushions, or spacious armchairs make the dining area a pleasant place to be even after the last course.
It’s worth taking a look at the freedom of movement: Can guests stand up comfortably? Is there enough space between the chairs? Are glasses and bowls within easy reach on the table? Often, it’s details like these that determine how much people enjoy staying seated.
One more tip: It’s best to keep the number of guests manageable. That way, everyone will have enough space at your dinner party, and no one will be left out!
Good hosts pay attention to the little things
A successful evening doesn’t begin at the dinner table. The moment guests arrive, it becomes clear whether they’ll feel welcome at the dinner party.
A small light in the entryway, background music, and a place to set down jackets and bags create a relaxed atmosphere as guests arrive. If you’d like, you can set out a drink and a few snacks.
Open-concept layouts, where the kitchen, dining area, and living room flow into one another, are particularly practical. While the host is still cooking, guests can already chat or take a seat at the kitchen counter. This works just as well in smaller apartments. A compact dining table that can be extended when needed, additional folding chairs, or a cozy bench create space for social gatherings even in limited spaces.
By the way, it’s perfectly fine to let a little bit of everyday life show through. After all, the stack of books on the coffee table, your favorite blanket draped over the back of the sofa, or the mismatched set of dishes all say something about the people who live here.
The best evenings can’t be planned
Perhaps it is precisely this casualness that accounts for the newfound enthusiasm for entertaining: it’s not about impressing others with a perfectly staged home or exceptional culinary skills.
What’s much more important is the atmosphere—one where no one feels the need to check their watch or make up excuses to leave early… because we remember a good dinner party when there was lots of laughter and we felt welcome.
And that, I suppose, is the most beautiful definition of hospitality: a home where people not only enjoy coming, but also enjoy staying.
