Wall paint basics: Which colors suit your home?
Can a small room only tolerate light colors? What about pitched roofs? And what can we make of the comeback of wallpaper? It is easier to breathe new life into a room with a new wall color than to completely redecorate it. Ing. Michael Osmann, an expert in the restoration of old buildings and new buildings with the character of old buildings (osmann.at), knows how to do it right – 6 questions, 6 answers.
When can I use dark colors?
Dark wall colors make rooms look bigger. If I have a long corridor, for example, a dark tone is ideal because it gives depth. However, it is important to make sure that there are enough contrasts – light-colored furniture, a white ceiling or light-colored flooring.
Can I paint each room a different color?
In principle, whatever you like is allowed. In principle, however, I always advise sticking to one color family. In the meantime, most manufacturers such as “Farrow Ball” have put together such “color families”, the selection is enormous. If you stick to it on the whole, an apartment or house will look more harmonious.
Is it generally possible to paint windows and doors the same color as the wall?
For rooms that have several doors, it is even a very good solution to “delete” some doors. This makes the room appear larger, whereby the one central door should already stand out. Windows are now also often painted – in the past they were white, then beige, but today the trend is towards shades of gray.
What do I need to think about before deciding on bold wall colors?
You should ask yourself one question: Do I want to set accents with furniture or with colors? For me, it’s either or. It is also essential that I take a close look at the wall beforehand. If it has been painted many times, the new wall paint may crumble – each additional coat increases the risk. And when painting over wallpaper, you should make sure that it is not damp – otherwise the paint will bubble.
What to do when repair work is due?
Even a small stain requires the entire wall to be painted.
Several wall colors in one room – is that possible?
Absolutely! There is also a trend here from the USA, where a stronger tone is used in the lower area – up to a height of around one meter – and a softer tone from the same family above. This technique makes lower rooms appear higher.
