Upholstery covers: Everything you need to know!
Are you buying new bed linen and the pillowcase doesn’t fit your pillow? This has become a widespread dilemma. Because every country not only has different customs, but also different pillow sizes. A guide to diversity.
When buying bed linen these days, it’s worth taking a double look at the essentials: After all, it’s no longer just the material that is decisive, but also the answer to the question of whether the pillowcase in particular matches the upholstery I have chosen. At the Kastner&Öhler furniture store in Graz, which also has an extensive range in terms of sleeping comfort, there is a clear message here: “We offer the bed linen with a 70x90cm upholstery cover”, says Pamela Pausch from Home Shopping, “that’s the size for Austria”.
Small Switzerland, great diversity
And this has been the case since the end of the 1990s. At that time, the bed linen was changed to a standard size of 140x200cm (comforter) and 70x90cm, while you can often choose the size of the comforter, the upholstery covers remain standardized. The main problem here is that bedding manufacturers from other countries also offer upholstery covers that are valid in their country – and not necessarily in Austria. In Germany, for example, the 80×80 size is widely used, while Switzerland has a total of seven (!) different sizes depending on the region. There is also a Swedish furniture store that naturally specializes in standard Nordic sizes. In other words, covers in the size 50×50 or 50×60.
Finding the right upholstery cover
All well and good – but what to do? There are several options here:
- If your cover is larger than the cushion, you can have it cut to size at a reasonable price. Either at your trusted tailor or in furniture stores with their own tailor’s shop, such as Kastner&Öhler.
- Combine colors – if there is no matching cover for your pillow, choose a (single-colored) upholstery cover that goes well with the bedding. This also provides variety.
- In addition to the standard size, some manufacturers also offer a variety of other sizes. Pausch: “UNI covers from Fleuresse, for example, are available in a double pack in four different special sizes.” The disadvantage: they have to be purchased separately.
- You think about whether your pillow is the right one for you. Because even if large standard pillows are decorative and cozy – they are not suitable for every type of sleeper. A pillow measuring 40 x 80 cm is recommended for stomach and side sleepers so that the spine is straight and can relax during sleep. Small pillows (15×40) are particularly suitable for back sleepers.
As you can see, there are several ways to find the right upholstery cover.
