With the right autumn decorations and stylish accessories, autumn becomes the coziest time of the year. Interior expert Aline Grasl Gagern shows you how to transform your home into a feel-good oasis.
Imagine yourself reading a good book by soft candlelight on the couch, snuggled up in a warm blanket. Meanwhile, a fragrant potpourri of vanilla, cardamom and patchouli exudes its soothing aromas. Sounds like the perfect feel-good atmosphere, doesn’t it? This can be achieved with just a few well thought-out details.
For example, with the right use of light: “The best way to create a cozy autumn atmosphere is to use lamps and lights that produce a warm, diffuse light,” says interior designer Aline Grasl-Gagern. “It is ideal to work with different indirect light sources to create a cozy atmosphere.” Dimmable lights that allow you to adjust the light intensity as required are particularly practical. “For cozy hours at home, the lighting can be supplemented with small accent lights or decorative illuminated objects, such as fairy lights. The cozy atmosphere is rounded off with candles, which can be placed as desired.”
Candles for a cozy atmosphere
Whether as a pillar candle on its own or in a beautiful glass jar, as a tea light in decorative glasses or in groups on a couch or dining table – candles are versatile. “Candles radiate warmth and create a fascinating interplay of light and shadow,” says Grasl-Gagern. She likes to group candles of different sizes and shapes, for example on the coffee or dining table, to create visual accents.
Alternatively, you can use electric LED candles with a timer function. They are particularly ideal in combination with decorations such as dried flowers, twigs or leaves, as there is no risk of anything starting to burn. The expert’s tip: “Decorative scented candles, such as those from Baobab, are also suitable for creating a cozy atmosphere. They are available in different fragrances, designs and sizes. An absolute eye-catcher!”
Diffusers, fragrance sticks and scented lamps can also be stylishly integrated into your fall decorations. Warm aromas such as vanilla, cardamom, cinnamon, apple, clove and sandalwood create a cozy autumn ambience.
Comfortable textiles
What else shouldn’t be missing? Without a doubt: cuddly blankets and soft cushions! These are essential in the fall to make your home even more inviting. Soft, warm materials such as wool, fleece, knitwear and cashmere bring even more comfort into the home.
Small lights, big effect
Fairy lights are also an absolute must-have for fall decorations. “In warm white tones, they create particularly atmospheric accents.” Colorful lanterns, garlands of leaves or mini light bulbs – depending on the style, there is a diverse selection. The interior expert’s favorite is woven rattan, “because it creates a particularly cosy atmosphere.”
Natural materials
Wood and metal underline the autumnal look. “Metallic elements in warm colors such as copper, brass or bronze create elegant accents,” says Grasl-Gagern. “More modern elements such as candlesticks made of black metal can also be perfectly combined. Add accessories made of wood, rattan, seagrass, jute and cork to your autumn set-up for extra warmth and naturalness.
Dried flower arrangements and bouquets of pampas grass are also perfect for an autumnal ambience.
Outdoor fall decorations
If you also want to create a cozy atmosphere outdoors, Grasl-Gagern also recommends using fairy lights that spread a soft light on balcony railings, along paths or in treetops. “Fire bowls in the garden are a highlight and provide both light and warmth for social gatherings in the garden or on the patio.”
In a nutshell, what’s important for fall decorations:
Lighting design: Use warm, diffuse light with dimmable luminaires and various indirect light sources such as fairy lights and accent lights to create an inviting autumn atmosphere.
Candles: Use candles in different sizes and shapes – whether pillar candles, tea lights or in groups – to create a fascinating play of light and shadow. Add scented candles to your decorations for extra comfort.
Room fragrances: Create a cozy atmosphere with warm aromas such as vanilla, cardamom, cinnamon, apple, clove and sandalwood. Use scented candles, diffusers or fragrance sticks to diffuse these fragrances in your room.
Textiles: Make your home extra cozy with cuddly blankets and soft cushions made from materials such as wool, fleece, knitwear and cashmere. These textiles make a significant contribution to the feel-good atmosphere.
Natural materials and outdoor areas: Incorporate natural materials such as wood, rattan, seagrass, jute and cork into your autumn decorations to emphasize warmth and naturalness. For outdoors, we recommend fairy lights and fire bowls to create a cozy atmosphere in the garden or on the patio.
