A pool at home – what to look for
The temperatures climb beyond 30 degrees, we long for a welcome cooling. But the nearest lake or even the sea is a long way off – and the outdoor pools are crowded and noisy. At least all those who have their own garden, can solve the problem quite quickly – with the help of their own pool.
Both Covid and global warming have made this trend boom in recent years, but there are still some points to consider before fulfilling your dream of having a swimming pool at home.
Can I put a pool in my backyard without being asked?
The answer is: yes. If you want to build a pool, you should check in advance with the local building authority whether it needs a permit. It is best to make a sketch of the garden in advance and draw in it the pool that you want to have.
If they are small pop-up pools, a permit is not normally required. Nevertheless, it is advisable to inform the neighbors about the pool – if only to avoid any disagreements.
Where to put the swimming pool?
Take a close look at where the best location for your pool might be. It is advisable to have a sunny place so that the water warms up in the best possible way. Furthermore, we recommend building or placing the pool near the house. For one thing, it makes it easier to serve coffee, drinks and snacks by the pool, and for another, you can always keep an eye on the kids while they’re splashing around.
Also, be careful not to place the pool near trees or shrubs, which can lose a lot of branches or leaves in the wind and weather – otherwise you will be cleaning more than bathing.
It should not be forgotten that necessary electricity and water connections are available. Also, the pool should be positioned so that the filter pump is always accessible for regular cleaning.
Not all pools are the same – what are the differences?
One thing in advance: the choice is huge! From small inflatable pools to pools cast in concrete and steel wall pools – what pleases is allowed. And what the purse allows. In addition to the price factor, however, space requirements and the amount of work involved also play an essential role.
For this it is important to know in advance what the pool will be used for: If it is intended for children to cool off and splash around on hot days, a round or oval one is recommended. But if you want to swim your laps every day, you should get a square pool with the appropriate length. In addition, there is the question of how many people should take a place in the pool.
In terms of construction, pools are distinguished between swimming pools for digging in and swimming pools for installation. Nowadays, for both options there are ready-made pools, which are of high quality.
What costs should I expect?
Inexpensive models are already available for around €300 (excluding installation). If you choose one of the middle class, you can expect costs of €800,- upwards, whereby powerful filter systems or access ladders are already included here. You should calculate at least €1500 for a top model, although the upper limit is very wide open here. Depending on the size of the pool, the material chosen and the labor time – an above ground pool will obviously be much cheaper than one that requires digging.
Of course, the use also plays a role here: if you want to use your pool all year round, install special tools such as a counter-current system or similar, you should in any case not act on your own – here it is worthwhile to call in experts who will professionally “tailor” the pool to you.
How do I clean and maintain a pool?
This is relatively simple: leaves, needles, small broken branches, etc. can be removed effortlessly on a regular basis with the help of a landing net. Before entering the pool, it is best to wash your feet briefly. In this way, you can prevent the pelvic floor from becoming unnecessarily dirty.
The filter system of the swimming pool should be serviced at regular intervals. A high quality sand filtration system may be a little more costly to purchase, but in the longer term it is very profitable due to low maintenance and higher performance.
If you are not at home for a few days or the weather temporarily does not cooperate, you can unceremoniously cover the swimming pool with a protective tarp. If you want to clean your pool thoroughly with the least possible effort and achieve maximum efficiency, you should use a special pool vacuum.
In short, a pool makes it possible to spend the vacation in your own backyard. And gives pleasure to children and adults alike – whether you choose a cheap or an expensive swimming pool.
