Korean cosmetics are popular worldwide: because of their highly effective formulations, innovative products and detailed packaging. At the heart of K-Beauty is the principle of “layering”, i.e. the layering of several products that are specifically coordinated with one another. The goal is a flawless, radiant complexion – trends such as Glass Skin or Mirror Skin have shaped this philosophy globally in recent years. Korean skincare has now also arrived in Austria – and we explain what’s behind it, including free instructions for the popular 10-step routine to download.
Korean skincare is not just a routine, but a culture: in Korea, skincare is considered self-care, not a luxury. While Western skincare routines often consist of three steps – cleansing, care and protection – the Korean routine comprises up to ten steps. The difference lies in the thoroughness: instead of quick results, K-Beauty focuses on continuity and prevention.
Social media – especially Instagram, TikTok and YouTube – have made the trend visible globally. Tutorials and “Get Ready with Me” videos let millions watch how people care for themselves layer by layer to achieve radiant skin.
The 10-step routine for Korean skincare at a glance
The famous “10 Step Skincare Routine” is based on the layering principle: first come the light, watery textures, then the rich ones. It does not have to be carried out in full every day, but it is the heart of K-Beauty.
- Double cleansing: First a cleansing oil or balm against make-up, sunscreen and sebum, then a water-based gel or foam against sweat and dirt.
- Exfoliation: Mechanical or chemical peeling to remove dead skin cells.
- Toner: Restores the pH value of the skin and makes it receptive.
- Essence: Light texture with fermented ingredients that promote hydration and anti-aging.
- Serum or ampoule: Highly concentrated active ingredients to combat specific problems – pigmentation spots, lack of moisture, blemishes.
- Sheet Mask: Two to three times a week for intensive moisture and glow.
- Eye cream: Especially for the delicate skin area.
- Emulsion or cream: Seals the care layers and protects against moisture loss.
- Oil or rich night care: For dry skin.
- Sun protection: The most important step during the day – UV protection is essential in Korea.
The morning routine is lighter (cleansing, toner, essence, cream, sun protection), while the evening routine is more intensive with exfoliation, masks and rich care.

Current trends: Glass Skin & Mirror Skin
Glass skin describes a complexion that looks so clear, smooth and translucent that it is reminiscent of glass. This requires consistent hydration, multi-layered moisturizing care, brightening ingredients such as vitamin C and niacinamide as well as regular peelings. The effect leaves the skin looking fresh, flawless and “translucent”.
Mirror Skin goes one step further. Here, the skin should appear so shiny, flawless and smooth that it reflects like a mirror. This is achieved with multi-layered serums, rich moisturizers and make-up tricks: primer, light BB creams, cream blush and finally balm or gloss on the cheekbones.
Both trends cannot be achieved overnight – they are the result of continuous care and targeted product selection.
Popular ingredients in Korean skincare and their effects
K-Beauty is known for its innovative – and often unusual – ingredients:
- Hyaluronic acid: Provides intensive moisture, plumps up the skin.
- Niacinamide: Counteracts hyperpigmentation, strengthens the skin barrier.
- Snail mucin: Promotes healing, regeneration and elasticity.
- Tiger grass (Centella Asiatica): Soothes and reduces redness.
- Ginseng: Stimulates blood circulation, antioxidant effect.
- Travel extracts: moisturize and have a gentle exfoliating effect.
Practical tips for use
- Regularity is crucial: visible results only appear after weeks of consistent care.
- Less is sometimes more: If you are starting out, you should begin with 3 to 4 steps and slowly expand your routine.
- Don’t forget sun protection: UV protection is the foundation for every glow.
- Pay attention to skin type: Oily skin needs light textures, dry skin may require richer care.
Is Korean Skincare suitable for European skin types?
Basically yes – the principles of cleansing, hydration and protection apply universally. However, it is important to note that European skin often has different needs to Asian skin: it is usually lighter in color, more sensitive to UV rays and more prone to dryness due to climatic differences (heating air, winter cold). Fragrances or highly concentrated active ingredients can also cause irritation on sensitive skin.
Experts therefore advise: choose products carefully, try out a few steps first and observe how the skin reacts. If you consistently integrate sun protection and use high-quality, gentle products, you can also take full advantage of the Korean routine here in Germany.
