Who hasn’t heard of it: nowadays, there are glasses to match almost every wine and before you know it, the display cabinet in the dining room resembles a well-stocked specialist store. It is not necessary to be so precise, says master sommelier Alexander Koblinger. Here’s a little guide to which glasses are always right for you.
The water glass
Even if it is not given quite as much importance – the water glass is the be-all and end-all in every household, because it is of course used particularly often. It should be neutral and easy to hold. Make sure that it fits well in the dishwasher and is designed in such a way that it cannot tip over.
The myth of the champagne flute or bowl
Honestly, do we really need them? The connoisseur definitely says no! After all, a high-quality sparkling wine not only needs the right temperature (don’t serve it too cold!), but also the necessary space to develop its full potential. He recommends a glass with plenty of volume, ideally a universal glass. But don’t worry – you don’t have to throw away the champagne flutes now. They are ideal for cocktails and sorbets. And of course, flutes can still be used when it comes to toasting a birthday or New Year with friends.
White and red wine glasses
A universal glass is ideal for white wine because it has a surface. No household should be without a beautiful red wine glass, all of which should be thin-walled and delicate. Very important: Make sure that all glasses are dishwasher-safe! Most dishwashers now also have suitable attachments for stemware. The risk of something breaking is lower than with manual cleaning.
Colored glasses
The expert clearly advises against this. After all, you want to be able to recognize not only the taste but also the color of the wine.
The right way to clean of the glasses
As already mentioned, the dishwasher is the best tool for getting glasses clean. If any water remains on the edge after washing, you can easily remove it with a microfiber cloth. Important: Hold the glass in your left hand with the upright pointing downwards and clean carefully.
