Cleaners, gardeners and pool boys will soon be a thing of the past – smart robots are increasingly helping with house and garden maintenance.
Vacuuming, mopping, cleaning windows, mowing the lawn and, and, and – many people are anything but happy to do house and garden work. Not least because valuable free time often has to be sacrificed for this. According to Statistics Austria, women and girls aged ten and over spend three hours and seven minutes a day doing housework. Men and boys, on the other hand, only one hour and 54 minutes.
Robots as household helpers
This makes it all the more pleasing that robots can now be found not only in industrial halls, but also increasingly in households, where they are taking over unloved tasks. However, one thing should not be forgotten: The smart roommates, which are either connected to a power cable, charged at a station or have a rechargeable battery, need to be maintained and cleaned regularly. In any case, the market for eager helpers is now large. The same applies to differences in quality and price.
Vacuum and mopping robot
They whizz across the floor more or less briskly and swallow up dust, crumbs and hair – vacuum and mopping robots have become popular roommates. So popular that in many cases they have even been given a name by their owners.
But even if they do a lot of the work for you: Occasionally, the classic vacuum cleaner, mop or cleaning bucket and cloth may still have to be used, as the robots usually can’t get into every corner.
Higher thresholds or high-pile carpets or grease stains can also pose a challenge for them. In addition to performance, running time, the type of filter and functions, the size and shape of the robot hoover/mopping robot should also be considered as selection criteria.
Window cleaning robot
Cleaning windows and other glass surfaces is at the bottom of many people’s to-do list – after all, it is time-consuming and tedious. A remedy is in sight thanks to window cleaning robots. The self-propelled robots are attached to the window and, depending on the model, magnets or a strong vacuum ensure that they stay there. The robots, which use a brush and a water sprayer or a special cloth for cleaning, move along the window using non-slip rubber or plastic chains.
Depending on the model, they can also be used to clean the glass surfaces of conservatories or shower walls. Important criteria for selecting the right appliance include the size of the windows, the cleaning mode, speed, volume and suction power.
Robot mower
Self-propelled lawn mowers are now making their mark in more and more gardens. To ensure that the result meets expectations, several points should be considered in addition to the size of the garden: Is the garden angled? Are there many obstacles in the lawn? Are there gradients? Is it possible to charge the robotic lawnmower? All of this is essential for the performance of the battery and robot. You should also pay attention to what safety features it has – and how loudly it does its job.
Pool robot
Spending hours scrubbing the walls and floor of the pool to remove algae and other deposits is a thing of the past. Pool robots clean the floor, walls and even the waterline of the pool without you having to do much yourself. Only in corners and hard-to-reach places should you do it yourself from time to time.
They also help to protect the filters, as they remove many dirt particles before they reach the filter. When purchasing the pool robot, make sure that it is not only suitable for the size of the pool, but also its shape – if it has a special one.
The automation of robots is progressing
In the next few years, however, robots will probably also take on other household tasks. The World Economic Forum estimates that 40 percent of housework can be automated in the next ten years.
In the USA, there are already pilot projects in the catering industry in which robotic arms prepare coffee or burgers. In restaurants and cafés at home, too, you often come across robots helping the human service staff with serving or serving up. Two years ago, Dyson announced its intention to launch a domestic robot with arms on the market by 2030.
