Green walls: these options are available
Green walls are increasingly found in private homes. By the way, moss walls are particularly popular.
The color green has many positive properties: it calms, promotes both concentration and creativity. Then also bring plants the green in the apartment, the effect of the color is immediately reinforced. So it’s no wonder that green walls are increasingly finding their way into private homes.
“Moss walls are particularly popular,” says Thomas Polanyi of “Florawall.” For him, the advantages are obvious: “They are decorative, sound-absorbing and do not need to be poured or otherwise maintained,” says the expert.
In addition, the flexibility of moss is higher and large areas are not required. “With the various species of flat and spherical mosses, which are usually cultivated and preserved and recolored after harvesting, it is also possible to create pictures or even art objects as large as 30 by 30 centimeters,” Polanyi explains.
For a high-quality moss wall – depending on the type of moss – between 350 and 600 euros per square meter net would have to be calculated. In addition, there are the costs of frame and delivery. “Quality suppliers also offer installation, which is highly recommended, especially for large moss walls,” Polanyi knows.
Stabilized moss
But there is also one or the other minus point: “Moss walls are not alive and also do not affect the indoor climate,” explains the Florawall boss. And there is something else that interested people should remember: moss walls should be protected from direct sunlight and high heat, so as not to discolor.
Living plants
If you prefer to surround yourself with living plants, you should choose a wall planted with them – if the space is available.
Whereby the space refers not only to the available wall area (according to Polanyi, a minimum width of one meter is required), but also to the depth of the room: namely, the greened walls are about 25 centimeters deep. The fact that they require more space than moss walls is due to the fact that live plants may very well need watering. “That means you need a pump, a controller and a water inlet and outlet, or a tank,” Polanyi says.
However, the latter must be replenished every seven to ten days. Another prerequisite for lush greenery on the wall is light or artificial lighting and fertilizer.
But this is not the end of the care: After all, occasionally have to remove withered leaves and flowers, and possibly replace one or another plant. “On average, three percent of the plants used die,” says Polanyi, who sets about 40 plants per square meter. In view of this, he is also happy to offer to take over the maintenance of the walls.
Subtropical plants
Speaking of plants, “We use subtropical plants, some of which are flowering,” Polanyi tells us. By the way, these are no longer planted in soil, but as hydroponics: this makes the vertical gardens lighter and, weighing 15 kilos per square meter, they can be easily installed almost anywhere.
In view of the expenditure green walls with living plants strike clearly more expensively than moss walls: One must count for a relatively simple variant without lighting on a price of approximately 1,100 to 1,300 euro per square meter , says the expert.
