However, it should be said in advance: no matter what piece of furniture it is, in case of doubt and panic, it may always be the best choice to call a professional cleaning service. Still, it’s definitely worth knowing the basics when it comes to furniture cleaning to keep your home clean and spotless with little effort, even without professional help. Cleaning hacks are divided into different materials and category of the particular piece of furniture. The most important and trickiest ones are listed here at a glance!
Garden furniture
Basically, modern garden furniture should be made of weatherproof and durable materials so that it can withstand bad weather. Nevertheless, regular care is important. Over the winter, or over a longer period of bad weather, or even if you are not at home for a long time, it is recommended to put the outdoor furniture under a roof or at least under a tarp. About every two weeks should take care of cleaning the garden furniture. Plastic only needs to be wiped with a damp cloth, so it is very easy to clean. Wood is a natural material, so without care it will weather. Cleaning is done with water, possibly wood cleaner and brush, sandpaper helps against graying, then you should oil or wax the wood to give it a protective and shiny surface. Plastic tarps are best avoided as mold could form on the wood. Metal outdoor sets are simply cleaned with a sponge and water, a varnish matched to the metal helps against oxidation.
Leather – smooth and rough
Depending on the type of leather, there are small differences in cleaning. Thus, smooth leather is rather insensitive and easier to wipe than other types of leather. Vinegar can also be used to remove more stubborn stains. Rough leather, on the other hand, does not have a smooth surface structure, but is a bit abraded, which makes the surface more sensitive and, unfortunately, more susceptible to stains. In addition, such open-pored leather can also repel water only to a limited extent, which means that the fats contained in the leather are flushed out on contact with water and the surface becomes brittle over time. In case of soiling, it is therefore best to use a soft brush for cleaning first. For coarser stains like grease, it is recommended to sprinkle a small heap of baking soda on the stain – this will suck the grease out of the leather after a few hours. Simpler to clean is imitation leather, which is clearly more durable and therefore better to maintain than real leather. In fact, artificial leather is not an organic material made of animal skin, but consists of artificial fibers. However, from the outside, artificial and genuine leather are almost identical.
Wood
Wooden furniture, if oiled, can be cleaned with a damp – not wet! – cloth to be wiped off. This also applies to wooden floors: too much water makes the wood fill up. Lacquered wood should be maintained once or twice a year with a furniture polish, pay attention to good quality!
White
White furniture and walls are simply chic and timeless – unfortunately also incredibly dangerous with stains, because you see them immediately! Probably the most efficient way to keep white upholstered furniture unstained is to avoid the dirt directly! For this purpose, there are stain protectors for sale in specialized stores. This works much like a waterproofing spray: spray it on, let it soak in, and the protective shield is activated! Another method is to make sure when buying that the piece of furniture has removable covers. So you can just put them in the wash should they no longer look fresh. The following applies to bed linen: Always remove make-up – mascara stains are difficult to get out again! It should also be noted that direct sun should be avoided with white furniture, because after some time a yellow tint will mix in!
With this basic knowledge you are prepared for emergencies and can protect yourself against stains! Therefore, it is said: designer pieces can shine in the middle of the living room and do not have to be locked away. Because: If you are armed, you don’t have to hide!
