Even without air conditioning, indoor rooms can be well tempered at least for some time when temperatures rise. We have collected some tips and tricks for this.<\/p>\n\n

Hot days and possibly tropical nights contribute to the fact that even indoors the temperature climbs relentlessly. But there are ways and means to keep your own four walls cool, at least for a while, even without air conditioning. <\/p>\n\n

The first choice here are outdoor shades, which protect interiors from heat three times better than indoor blinds. “If the former cannot be installed, you should definitely install interior blinds,” says Claus Hollweck of “Die Umweltberatung Wien”. <\/p>\n\n

Thermal insulating or solar control glazing also keeps the heat out to a certain extent. If the latter is tinted, they absorb the energy, coated glasses, in turn, reflect the sunlight. <\/p>\n\n

Curtains – especially if they are made of light-colored, highly reflective material – also make a noticeable contribution to keeping the room temperature at a tolerable level.<\/p>\n\n

Ventilate properly<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

It is also important to ventilate the rooms – at night or early in the morning. A fan can also help. “It doesn’t cool the air, but it does create a cooling effect on the skin,” Hollweck said. <\/p>\n\n

And another thing is important, according to the expert: namely, to avoid additional sources of heat. “For example, stand-by mode of electrical appliances should also be avoided,” Hollweck advises.<\/p>\n\n

Plan ahead<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

If you are planning a new building, you can make your house heat-resistant in advance: For example, cantilevered building components or extended roofs help to protect glass surfaces from the high summer sun. Speaking of glass surfaces: Not only large glass surfaces, but also small windows, provided they are unshaded, noticeably warm the interior. <\/p>\n\n

If the summer sun shines unhindered on a window area of around 1.5 square meters with normal glazing, this has a similar effect to the operation of a 1000-watt fan heater. <\/p>\n\n

Solid building components made of concrete, brick or wood as well as insulation of roof and walls also buffer temperature peaks and stabilize indoor temperatures. <\/p>\n\n

The same applies to green facades and roofs. This is because the plants are constantly evaporating water, thus extracting heat from the environment. Last but not least, modern technologies such as building component activation help to cool buildings in an energy-efficient way, but also to heat them. In this case, water-carrying pipelines are usually routed through ceilings, but also walls or floors, in order to use the storage masses of these components for temperature regulation.<\/p>\n\n
