Interior classic: The Berkel<\/p>\n\n

Cut wafer-thin: After more than 100 years, the Berkel name still stands for perfection, reliability, innovation and a long service life.<\/p>\n\n

According to legend, it was complaints from his customers about slices of mortadella that were cut too irregularly that prompted Rotterdam butcher Wilhelmus Adrianus van Berkel to think of a solution in 1898. The butcher benefited from his interest in mechanics and machines. And indeed: after numerous trials, a few months later the first mechanical slicer with manual automation was born. The principle behind it is relatively simple: a round – and above all concave – blade to imitate the movements of hand and knife, a movable plate for the material to be cut, and a flywheel that sets both parts in motion. W.A. Berkel recognized the potential of his invention and in October 1898 founded the world’s first factory for slicing machines in Rotterdam under the name “Van Berkel’s Patent”. In the same year, 84 copies were already produced.<\/p>\n\n

W.A. Berkel did not rest on its laurels: In addition to technical innovations – the slicers were soon equipped with grinding heads to keep the cutting edges sharp – the company focused on further developing its model range: as early as 1918, smaller bread slicers and scales were added to the portfolio. Today, in addition to the traditional Berkel models with flywheel, electric cutters, professional knives for kitchen and outdoor use as well as vacuuming devices make the hearts of Berkel fans beat faster. Because over the years, the innovative producer of slicers has become the manufacturer of a true status symbol that stands for a certain lifestyle and passion. Therefore, not only the current, but also historical models are in demand. This is especially true of the legendary and already rare Model L, which was produced between 1906 and 1917. This has namely a special feature: The sled runs on four wheels and is not moved by means of arm.<\/p>\n\n
