This newfound enthusiasm for entertaining is changing the way we view our own homes. Living spaces are once again being designed more consciously as places for socializing. The so-called \u201csharing\u201d concept also fits perfectly with this new form of hospitality. Many small dishes are placed in the center of the table, and everyone helps themselves, tastes the food, and shares it. It\u2019s worth taking a look at the freedom of movement: Can guests stand up comfortably? Is there enough space between the chairs? Are glasses and bowls within easy reach on the table? Often, it\u2019s details like these that determine how much people enjoy staying seated.<\/p>\n\n

Perhaps it is precisely this casualness that accounts for the newfound enthusiasm for entertaining: it’s not about impressing others with a perfectly staged home or exceptional culinary skills.<\/p>\n\n

What’s much more important is the atmosphere\u2014one where no one feels the need to check their watch or make up excuses to leave early\u2026 because we remember a good dinner party when there was lots of laughter and we felt welcome. <\/p>\n\n

And that, I suppose, is the most beautiful definition of hospitality: a home where people not only enjoy coming, but also enjoy staying.<\/p>\n\n
