Especially in the city, this design style is intended to create a sense of calm, comfort, and a stronger connection to the natural environment.

The longing for nature is shaping our living spaces more than ever. But biophilic design means more than just placing a few houseplants around. It’s about spaces that holistically incorporate light, air, materials, colors, and shapes from nature—and thereby create an atmosphere that is pleasant, vibrant, and restful.

What is biophilic design, and where does the term come from?

The term is derived from “biophilia,” which refers to the human connection to nature and other living beings. In interior design, it describes a design approach that consciously integrates natural elements into architecture and living spaces.

These include plants and natural materials, as well as natural light, views of greenery, flowing forms, natural color schemes, and the interplay of light and shadow. The goal is not to make a room look like a forest, but to create a tangible sense of closeness to nature.

How does biophilic design differ from simple plant decor?

Plants are only part of the concept. So just because you put a few flowerpots on your windowsill doesn’t automatically mean you have a biophilic home.

Biophilic design takes the entire space into account: How does the light enter? What materials do we touch? Are there natural forms, varied surfaces, or a view of the outdoors? Good ventilation, pleasant acoustics, and unobstructed sightlines can also contribute to this.

What materials are associated with the biophilic interior design style?

Wood, stone, clay, linen, wool, cotton, cork, rattan, and other plant-based fibers are particularly well-suited. It is important that the materials look as natural as possible and that their texture remains visible or palpable.

A table with a distinct wood grain, coarsely woven curtains, or hand-formed ceramics convey a greater sense of closeness to nature than perfectly smooth plastic surfaces. That said, not all furniture needs to be made of natural materials: Often, a few carefully placed accents are enough.

How can I incorporate biophilic design into a city apartment?

Even without a garden or a view of greenery, you can bring nature into a city apartment. Arrange your furniture so that as much natural light as possible enters the room, and avoid using heavy curtains on the windows. Plants can be arranged in groups or distributed at different heights.

Wooden furniture, natural rugs, ceramics, and landscape paintings round out the concept. Even the sounds of nature, a small indoor fountain, or a spot by the window can strengthen the connection to the outside world.

Biophilic design in the bathroom promotes relaxation.

Which plants are best suited for biophilic living?

Above all, the plants should be suited to their specific location. For bright rooms, strelitzias, rubber trees, and fiddle-leaf figs are good choices. Sansevieria, zamioculcas, and some philodendron species can thrive in lower light conditions.

Combinations of different leaf sizes and growth habits look particularly natural. If you have limited space, you can place plants on shelves, in hanging baskets, or on trellises. However, a few healthy plants are better than an overcrowded room filled with poorly cared-for specimens.

What role does natural light play in biophilic design?

Natural light is one of the most important elements of biophilic living. It changes throughout the day, creates different moods, and makes materials and colors appear more vibrant.

Light-colored curtains, mirrors, and cleverly placed furniture can help distribute existing light more effectively throughout the room. In the evening, several warm, indirect light sources create a more natural atmosphere than a single harsh ceiling light.

How does biophilic living affect well-being and mental health?

Many people find spaces that bring them closer to nature to be calming and relaxing. Plants, natural light, and natural materials can create a pleasant atmosphere and help people relax or concentrate better.

However, biophilic design is not a medical treatment. Its strength lies primarily in making living spaces feel less sterile and more attuned to human needs. Especially when working from home, a workspace with natural light, plants, and a view of the outdoors can make a noticeable difference.

Biophilic design in a home office can also work well with wallpaper.

What is the difference between biophilic design and Japandi?

Japandi combines Japanese minimalism with Scandinavian coziness. It is characterized by clean lines, a few carefully selected pieces of furniture, muted colors, and a calm, uncluttered design.

Biophilic design is less of a defined interior design style and more of a design principle. It can be implemented in a minimalist, colorful, modern, or rustic way. Japandi and biophilic design therefore combine well: Both emphasize natural materials, functionality, and a calming atmosphere.

How do I combine biophilic elements with modern interior design?

Modern furniture provides a nice contrast to organic shapes and natural materials. For example, a sleek sofa can be paired with a wooden table, a wool rug, and a large plant.

To keep the room from looking cluttered, a consistent palette of materials or colors should be used. Black metal frames, glass, and smooth surfaces can remain—but wood, plants, and textiles help soften their austere look.

What colors and textures are typical of biophilic design?

The color palette is inspired by natural landscapes. It includes green, sand, beige, brown, terracotta, stone and earth tones, as well as muted blue. Light wood and warm shades of white lend a sense of lightness.

Textures are just as important. Smooth and rough, soft and firm surfaces can be alternated: wood grain meets linen, ceramic meets wool, or natural stone meets soft upholstery. This variety brings rooms to life without overloading them with decoration.

Related posts:

Wallpaper Is Making a Comeback: Trends and Tips for Every Room

The Best Fragrant Plants for Balconies and Patios

Vacation at Home: How to Give Your Home a Mediterranean Look

Natural light, plants, wood, and organic shapes: Biophilic design brings nature into our living spaces not just as decoration, but as an integral part of them.
