It’s right in your field of vision, usually even gets the best light in the room – and yet is often used as a shelf for post, half-buried plants and things that don’t fit anywhere else: the windowsill. We’ll show you that there’s another way … <\/em><\/p>\n\n

Don’t cheat: What’s on your windowsill right now? Last Tuesday’s mail? A long-dead orchid? Don’t worry – this is the norm, not the exception. Hardly any other surface in the home receives so much natural light and so much attention from outside. So it would be a shame to let this potential go to waste. <\/p>\n\n

More than just a place for plants<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

Plants<\/a> on the windowsill – that’s the classic. And yes, it works. But the windowsill can do so much more. Two coffee table books, a candle in heavy glass, a single sculpture: if you think of the windowsill like a shelf – curated, with air to breathe – you get an eye-catcher that changes with the daylight. <\/p>\n\n

The key here is that not every centimeter has to be occupied. If you want to display collections, arrange them in a line and work with deliberate spacing. The eye needs breaks. <\/p>\n\n

Our tip: If you decorate objects on the windowsill, it is best to group them on a tray or flat surface. This makes cleaning and airing much easier – and also gives the decoration a clearer frame. <\/p>\n\n

Deep window sills: the underestimated luxury<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

If you are lucky enough to have a deep windowsill – as is often the case in old buildings or solid wood houses – you should take it seriously as a place to sit. A flat cushion in firm fabric, perhaps a plaid laid to one side: the reading nook is ready, and doesn’t need its own room. If you want to frame the alcove even more, hang light curtains<\/a> to the side – this creates intimacy without taking away the light. <\/p>\n\n

And if you don’t have a deep windowsill? That can also be solved. A narrow sideboard or chest of drawers of exactly the same height, placed directly against the wall under the window, extends the area visually and practically. If you like it even more uncomplicated, simply slide a low stool or a small side table next to it – and the extended shelf is complete. <\/p>\n\n

Material determines the mood<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

Wood brings warmth – especially in combination with white walls or light-colored floors, a window sill made of oiled oak or walnut almost looks like a piece of furniture in its own right. Marble, on the other hand, has a cooling effect – both visually and to the touch. It suits modern bathrooms, kitchens with dark fronts and rooms that prioritize elegance over cosiness. Concrete is somewhere in between: rough, industrial, but surprisingly homely when combined with soft textiles and warm light. If you want to upgrade an existing windowsill without renovating, you can work with an overlay slab: A thin marble slab from a stonemason, cut to size, changes the look of the entire room – with comparatively little effort. <\/p>\n\n

Not all windowsills are the same<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

Different rules apply depending on the room. In the living room, the windowsill can become a small stage – with objects that show personality. Pragmatism is called for in the kitchen: herbs in pots are not only decorative, but also practical. If you like things tidier, place a small tray with oil, salt and a sprig of rosemary – functional yet stylish. In the bathroom<\/a>, on the other hand, materials that can withstand moisture are recommended: stone, ceramic, glass. A few candles, a small container with bath salts, a plant that likes steam – ivy or ferns, for example. Finally, in the bedroom<\/a>, the windowsill should remain quiet: few objects, soft shapes, nothing to keep the eye busy at night. <\/p>\n\n

Light makes the difference<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

The windowsill has the best natural light in the home during the day – but what about in the evening? A small battery-powered light, discreetly placed behind an object, changes the whole mood. Fairy lights work if they look high quality. Candles are the simplest and most effective solution: a single, heavy candle in a clear glass is often enough to transform the windowsill from daytime to evening mode. <\/p>\n\n

And that is perhaps the best thing about this small area: it can be rethought at any time – with a different object, a different light, a different season. The windowsill is small enough to be changed quickly – and large enough to shape the character of a room. A good reason to finally take it seriously. <\/p>\n\n
