Between the hoar frost and the short days, you can do the quiet work that you often don&#8217;t have time for in spring. Eight things you can do now to prepare your garden &#8211; including little professional tricks, numbers and timing.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-bestandsaufnahme-amp-plan-fur-2026-was-war-gut-was-fehlt\"><strong>1. stocktaking &amp; plan for 2026: What was good, what&#8217;s missing?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Before you touch anything: Walk through the garden on a dry day with a notebook (or cell phone) and write down the following:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Which beds were strong and which were weak in 2025?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Where were the summer flowers, where did vegetables grow?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which corners were too hot, too shady, too wet?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Draw a quick sketch and mark sun\/wind\/wet. Doing this now will save you hours in March. And: plants need space. If you are planning new shrubs or perennials, calculate with final sizes right away:   <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lavender: approx. 40-60 cm diameter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hydrangea: depending on variety 1-2 meters in diameter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Berry bushes: 1-1.5 meters in diameter<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-geholze-amp-obstbaume-schneiden-aber-nur-bei-richtiger-witterung\"><strong>2. pruning shrubs &amp; fruit trees &#8211; but only when the weather is right<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>The classic in winter, and for good reason: many woody plants are dormant and the structure is clearly visible without foliage. Important: Only prune when it is frost-free (ideally above +3\u00b0 Celsius). Shoots break more easily in heavy frost.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Suitable for pruning in February:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Apple, pear, quince (pome fruit)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Currants and gooseberries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ornamental shrubs that flower on new wood (e.g. summer lilac)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Not at all or only very carefully:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stone fruit (cherry, plum) rather late summer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spring-flowering plants such as forsythia &#8211; otherwise cut away the blossom.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Professional trick: Disinfect the scissors with alcohol, especially for fruit (fungal prophylaxis).<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-stauden-graser-amp-vertrocknete-samenstande-stehen-lassen-oder-entfernen\"><strong>3. perennials, grasses &amp; dried seed heads: leave or remove?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Many people leave everything standing in winter &#8211; this is ecologically excellent: seed heads feed birds, hollow stems provide insect habitats. Nevertheless, selective pruning is worthwhile: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Leave standing<strong>:<\/strong> coneflower, thistles, stonecrop, ornamental grasses &#8211; until March.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remove: mold or fungal infestation, muddy shrub remains, diseased leaves (e.g. rose rust).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>Composting rule:<\/strong> Only put healthy plant material in the compost. It is better to dispose of diseased parts in the organic waste &#8211; otherwise pathogens will overwinter. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-bodenpflege-mulch-prufen-verdichtete-stellen-erkennen\"><strong>4. soil care: check mulch, recognize compacted areas<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>You don&#8217;t dig in January &#8211; but you can read the soil. After snowmelt or rain, you can immediately see where there is water. Make a note of such places: in spring, sand or compost will help, possibly a drainage system.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Mulch check:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bark mulch\/leaves: is it still covering (approx. 3-5 cm)?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open soil: mulch lightly on frost-free days (protection against drying out and erosion).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>If you have compost: Sift it now. In the warm spring, fungi and pests explode &#8211; and they like to overwinter in old pots and cracks. <\/p>\n\n<p>To Do&#8217;s:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Clean pots and bowls with hot water + brush.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Greenhouse: Wash glass panes\/polycarbonate with mild soapy water &#8211; more light = earlier growth (plus\/minus 1-2 weeks head start depending on the weather).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check cold frame windows: Seals, hinges, ventilation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-vorkultur-starten-was-sie-jetzt-schon-aussaen-konnen\"><strong>6. start pre-cultivation: What you can sow now<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Suitable for the windowsill:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Chili, peppers (long cultivation time: 8-10 weeks until pricking out)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Artichoke<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Celeriac (slow, needs patience)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Early-flowering summer flowers such as snapdragons or sweet peas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Light is the key: without a plant lamp, the rule of thumb is the brightest window, but not above the heater. And to check the supplies, like this: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check expiration dates. Many seeds last longer, but germination rates drop. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Schnelltest:&nbsp;10 Samen&nbsp;auf feuchtem K\u00fcchenpapier keimen lassen.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Germination 7-8, everything is great.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Germination 3-4, better to buy more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Pay attention when shopping:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Site requirements (sun\/shade, soil)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Resistance in vegetables (e.g. against mildew)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Regional varieties that like your climate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-lebensraum-schaffen-nistkasten-futterstellen-wasser\"><strong>8. create a habitat: Nesting boxes, feeding places, water<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>In January you decide who will be moving in with you in the spring. So it&#8217;s good to take precautions: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cleaning\/hanging up nest boxes: ideally 2-3 m high, entrance hole away from the weather side.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep feeding places clean (risk of mold!).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide water if it does not freeze permanently &#8211; a shallow dish with a stone as a landing place is sufficient.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>Extra bonus:<\/strong> piles of dead wood or leaves as winter quarters for hedgehogs and insects.
