The reality of how we live is changing and the question of the future of housing is arising. What could it look like in 50 years? From intelligent solutions for urban living to “smart cities” – we discussed innovative technologies, sustainability and trends with experts from Destilat Vienna. It’s time to discover new ways and take up ideas to make future living better.<\/p>\n\n
Influencing factors for living in 50 years’ time<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n
The living of the future will be strongly influenced by several factors. Issues such as sustainability and environmental awareness, the influence of technological developments (smart homes), flexible forms of living (combination of living and working) and demographic changes (ageing population and changing family structures) are leading to an adaptation of living space. <\/p>\n\n
The first steps have already been taken. More and more recycled products are being used in both architecture and interior design, housing forms are becoming smaller, interior design is becoming more flexible and the desire for natural regional products is growing.<\/p>\n\n
Technological progress and climate change are expected to be the two strongest factors over the next 50 years. Adaptation to rising sea levels, extreme weather events and other environmental factors must be taken into account when designing living spaces and urban planning. Advances in areas such as renewable energy, artificial intelligence, 3D printing and virtual reality can revolutionize construction, energy efficiency, home automation and the way we use living spaces.<\/p>\n\n
Predictable living trends of the future<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n
The trend towards environmentally conscious living is likely to continue. Old and new buildings are being (re)built in an energy-efficient way, and smart devices and systems are making everyday life and comfort easier. In addition, more and more materials, furniture and building materials that are produced with a low environmental impact have been brought onto the market for years and recycling concepts are becoming increasingly important. <\/p>\n\n
Changing the living space – how?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n
The change will start with planning. Architectural offices are already working with 3D glasses, which can be used to walk through future projects. These and other developments in this area make it possible to better visualize the living space. The possible use of AI will probably enable projects to be implemented more quickly and more accurately.<\/p>\n\n
In terms of interior design, sustainable materials will become increasingly important. It is to be hoped that greater attention will be paid to environmentally friendly building materials, resource and energy efficiency must be maximized, and the greening of roofs and fa\u00e7ades in urban areas should be more strongly incorporated into the concepts. Living space should be increasingly geared towards sustainability and eco-friendliness.<\/p>\n\n
Changing living spaces through artificial intelligence<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n
AI is increasingly moving into the home and its influence will continue to grow. AI is already helping to personalize living – what preferences does the resident have in terms of lighting, temperature and room use? In addition, AI can also play a significant role in the security of the living space (burglary, fire, smoke development). AI will certainly also play a major role in the healthcare sector in the future. Systems have already been presented where motion detectors and room sensors can recognize whether the resident is well and if not, various forms of assistance can be offered. <\/p>\n

Fully automated interior design in 50 years<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n
It could be that individual pieces of furniture are equipped with sensors or actuators that enable them to adapt to the resident’s needs (e.g. bed, toilet). Areas such as lighting, air conditioning, cleaning and controlling the property are even more likely to be automated, as personal taste takes a back seat to interior design. <\/p>\n\n
Steps towards sustainable living<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n
The priority is to improve energy efficiency, increase water efficiency and use sustainable building materials. In addition, sealed surfaces should be removed. Integrating green spaces such as gardens, vertical gardens or green roofs into the living space can create a sustainable environment. However, raising awareness of sustainable living and imparting knowledge is crucial here. It would be important to start as early as possible with the youngest children and develop a separate school subject for them.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n
Green living – nature in the foreground<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n
For urban areas in particular, it would be more than relevant to incorporate nature in order to make cities more homely, cooler and attractive to live in in the long term. The inclusion of nature and green living urgently need to play an increasingly important role. There is a growing shift in awareness towards sustainable and environmentally friendly lifestyles, and housing is no exception.<\/p>\n\n
More energy-efficient living in 50 years – feasible?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n
Over the next 50 years, the focus on energy-efficient living should increase. Thanks to technological advances such as artificial intelligence and growing awareness of environmental issues, we should be able to create more energy-efficient housing solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n
The house of the future<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n
The future of home design and planning and interior design depends on many factors, including technological progress, social and economic developments and individual preferences and needs. The house of the future will probably be a combination of the two.<\/p>\n\n
