A lush green lawn is the dream of many amateur gardeners. If the existing greenery is getting on in years or the garden is being redesigned, sowing the lawn is therefore on the agenda. We asked Markus Lederleitner, head of the flower and gardening company of the same name, what it takes to ensure that your garden also goes to seed.
When should you sow grass?
In order to sprout and grow, lawn seeds need warmth as well as water and light. “Lawns should therefore be sown from April to mid-October,” advises Lederleitner. It is important that the ground is no longer frozen and there are no night frosts in sight.
The choice of semen
In order for the lawn to be healthy and vital, it is important to find the right seed for the respective conditions. According to Lederleitner, criteria include the geographical location and the climate. But the light conditions and the use of the lawn must also be taken into account when selecting the seed. “It is important to always use high-quality certified seed,” says Lederleitner.
The right preparation for the lawn
For lush greenery, a 20-30 cm thick turf base layer must be created. “The more even the level is, the better it is for further maintenance measures,” advises the garden expert. If the soil is compacted, it must be milled around 20 to 30 centimetres using a tiller and high-quality certified quartz sand worked in.
To avoid giving weeds and other weeds a chance, they and any roots should be removed before sowing. The substrate should ultimately be level and loose. Then sow the seeds by hand or with a spreader. “It is important that the seed does not lie on the surface. It should be worked 0.5 cm into the soil,” says Lederleitner.
Fertilizer can also be applied at the same time to give the seeds a good start. You should then exercise patience: Depending on the lawn mixture, it will take one to three weeks before the first tender green sprouts.
How often should I water after sowing?
“As soon as the seed has water, it swells. Without water, it dries out. The soil surface should therefore be kept moist throughout the day and watered several times a day,” says the garden expert. As soon as the first green is visible, the watering intervals are extended.
The first mowing after sowing
The lawn mower should only be started when the lawn has reached a length of seven to ten centimetres. “It is important that only a third of half the length is mowed, which corresponds to 2-3 cm,” says Lederleitner. After that, you can gradually go up to the desired height. “In summer, you should never mow below 4 cm blade length,” he recommends.
Gentleness is required
It takes around three to four months for the turf to become hard-wearing, and even longer for sports turf.
