10 TIPS AGAINST POLLEN IN YOUR HOME
Yes, spring… one man’s joy, another man’s sorrow. The days are getting longer, temperatures are rising and nature is showing its colorful side. However, the splendor of flowers also has its pitfalls, with pollen and pollen dust causing red eyes, itchy noses and breathing difficulties for allergy sufferers in the early summer months. Find out how you can protect yourself from pollen in your home here.
When spring becomes a horror
The number of pollen allergy sufferers in Austria has almost doubled in the last 20 years. Around 1.6 million Austrians struggle with symptoms such as a cold, rash, shortness of breath, watery eyes or a severe cough. The symptoms are so severe that many allergy sufferers avoid the outdoors as much as possible at this time. It’s a shame when the escape into your own four walls backfires because the pollen has long since found its way onto the floor, bed and couch.
What you can do against pollen in the home
To keep your household as pollen-free as possible, we have put together 10 tips to help you breathe easy again in spring.
1. get pollen screens – preferably as early as possible. Whether windows or balconies, pollen screens are an effective measure to prevent pollen from entering the home in the first place.
2 Depending on where you live, you should ventilate at different times in spring. In the countryside, most pollen circulates between four and six o’clock in the morning, so do not air the room until after 11 pm. If your home is in the city, you should again use the morning hours for ventilation. However, rainy days are generally the best time to get some fresh air into your own four walls.
3. do not use a fan, as this will only stir up the pollen.
4. avoid carpets, rugs and curtains as much as possible. This is where the pollen prefers to get stuck.
5 When you get home, you should change your clothes immediately. Ideally in the bathroom and not in the bedroom or living room so that the pollen is not dispersed.
6 If you suffer from allergies, you should wash textiles more often, especially bed linen.
7. also use allergy-friendly comforter covers and bed linen, as pollen does not stick to them as easily.
8. vacuum the home regularly (again with HEPA microfilter) and mop the floor.
9. find out which houseplants are suitable for allergy sufferers and avoid them altogether in the bedroom.
10 If you have pets that spend a lot of time outdoors, you should brush them more often in spring to remove pollen from their fur.
