They have long been familiar from bars and restaurants – but slowly but surely, lettering in the form of neon lights is also becoming very popular in our own four walls. We took a look at what it takes and how to use them optimally.
Once again, New York has made the start. In the Big Apple, neon lights have been used in the form of signs and billboards for around a hundred years, and for good reason: the inert gas in the neon tubes creates striking effects, while the technology behind them scores points for its low power consumption. By the 1950s, the use of other gases for this type of lighting had been discovered – for example helium, xenon, krypton or argon – each of which can be used to produce a different color of light. After bars, restaurants and the like, neon tubes have also found their way into households over the last ten years – and in many different ways.
Neon lights as a trendy alternative
In addition to pictures and plants, neon light creates a cozy but also trendy atmosphere. The light doesn’t dazzle, and the variety of signs that are now available in vintage stores or on various search engines is enormous. Nevertheless, you should consider a few things in advance:
- Where does the electricity come from? Neon lights need electricity, so you should make sure in advance that you have a power socket near the sign. If you have already decided on the decoration before the apartment is finished, all the better: the cable can be laid flush-mounted, otherwise a cable duct is the best solution. Another good solution is control via a timer.
- Less is more! You should not install more than one neon light per room because it will dominate the room. Children’s rooms and bathrooms, a house bar or the entrance area are particularly suitable for neon lights, as are outdoor areas such as the garden or terrace (covered).
- Create individuality. On the one hand, you can buy (vintage) neon lights online, and on the other hand, there are also companies that manufacture neon lights on request (e.g. B. via www.neonwords.co).
As you can see: The design possibilities with neon light are limitless. And the signs are an eye-catcher for every guest in your home.
