Time together is still the best gift. We have put together the best ideas for Mother’s Day excursions in and around Vienna and have the right destination for every mom.
The second Sunday in May is a good opportunity to say thank you to the most important woman in our lives. Not with a quickly bought bouquet, but with a whole day that belongs to her. Whether nature, culinary delights, culture or relaxation – Vienna and its surroundings offer the right program for every type of mom. Here are our favorite ideas:
For the connoisseur: brunch with a view
Vienna knows how to celebrate a Sunday. The Danube Tower, for example, offers an unforgettable ambience high above the rooftops of the city – breakfast with a panoramic view of the whole of Vienna is an experience that is guaranteed to be remembered.
A little less exciting, but at least as beautiful: a brunch in one of Vienna’s coffee houses, followed by a walk through the Prater. Chestnut avenues in full bloom, fresh spring air – wonderful!
For nature lovers: hiking in the Vienna Woods
If you want to get out of the city, the Vienna Woods are the place to be. The “Above the Trees” themed hiking trail invites you to explore: The trail winds its way through the forest for around 27 kilometers and leads to eight lookout points, including the Hussar Temple and the Kaiser-Franz-Josephs-Warte on the Harzberg. If you don’t want to walk the entire route, you can choose individual stages. The trail is also suitable for families with children.
A trip to the Rax is well worthwhile for sporty moms. The route from Preiner Gscheid to Heukuppe (takes around five hours for ten kilometers) rewards you with a breathtaking panoramic view – and Kaiserschmarrn in the mountain hut afterwards. It could hardly be better.
Vienna’s twelve city hiking trails are also a wonderful option for those who prefer a more leisurely pace: most routes can be completed in three to four hours and show just how green and diverse Vienna actually is.

For culture enthusiasts: music, history & strong women
Vienna is one of the most culturally rich cities in Europe and if you want to spend Mother’s Day with something special, you will quickly find it in the city center.
On this day, Mozarthaus Vienna is not focusing on the composer, but on the women in his life. The guided tour “Mamma mia im Mozarthaus” takes visitors on a journey through time to meet his caring mother, his quick-witted wife Constanze and, last but not least, the mysterious Queen of the Night. There are two dates to choose from: 17:30 or – for those who want to have the museum all to themselves – exclusively after closing time at 19:00.
For those seeking relaxation: Wellness & Spa
Some mothers simply want to leave everyday life behind and take a deep breath. Therme Wien offers a special ticket for Mother’s Day – including guaranteed entry, a box, a loaner bath towel and a voucher for the spa’s culinary delights. As this offer is very popular every year, we recommend booking early.
If you prefer something more exclusive, ask one of the many spa hotels around Vienna about pampering packages that make wonderful gifts. The ideal gift for anyone who wants to treat their mom to a few hours of time out.
For the explorer: A Mother’s Day trip to the Wachau region
One of the most beautiful spots in Austria is just an hour’s drive from Vienna. Castle ruins, vineyards and cozy wine taverns are lined up along 30 kilometers of the Danube. A stroll through Dürnstein with its turquoise-colored baroque houses, a glass of local Grüner Veltliner in the sun, apricot dumplings to finish – the Wachau is a gift for all the senses.
Whether it’s the view from the summit with Kaiserschmarrn or the thermal baths with sparkling wine: Vienna and its surroundings offer the best conditions for an unforgettable Mother’s Day. Choose your destination and enjoy a wonderful day together. Because if mom is happy, everyone is happy.
