Keeping your bouquet fresh
A bouquet of flowers is a wonderful tool for adding color and life to a room. Unfortunately, cut flowers often only have a limited shelf life. However, if you follow a few simple tips, you can enjoy the splendor of the flowers for longer. From choosing the right vase to optimal flower care – let yourself be inspired and discover the secrets to long-lasting freshness!
1. Choosing the right cut flowers
It is generally advisable to choose flowers that have a naturally longer shelf life. These include roses, lilies, chrysanthemums and carnations. Choose healthy, fresh flowers and make sure the leaves are firm, the stem is intact and there are no stains. The buds should neither be completely unopened nor too wide open. Closed buds will probably not all open and become limp, and if the buds are too wide open, there is a high risk that they are older cut flowers that will not stay fresh for long.
Also important: a lot of fragrance in flowers means less durability. Flowers that smell intensely put their energy into their fragrance rather than their lifespan.
2. Prepare the bouquet
With a fresh cut, flowers last a long time. Shorten the stems just before they go into the water. Cut them as diagonally as possible and make them all the same length. Hard-stemmed flowers such as the rose are cut with a sharp knife. Soft-stemmed flowers such as tulips just cut off. Remove leaves that are standing in water and repeat the pruning after a few days.
3. keep the bouquet fresh by changing the water daily
Place the cut flowers in lukewarm water and change it every day so that no bacteria or fungi form – these affect the shelf life of the flowers. Clean the vase and fill it about halfway with fresh water.
Tip: The rose particularly likes rainwater.
4. The location influences the shelf life of your cut flowers
Cut flowers feel most at home in a shady and airy place; draughts and heating should be avoided. The natural ripening gas from fruit can also cause flowers to wilt more quickly.
5. The right vase for a long-lasting fresh bouquet
Flowers need enough space to spread out or grow tall. Tall vases are suitable for tall flowers – thanks to the narrow vase neck, they won’t buckle. Voluminous flowers, on the other hand, do well in vases with a large opening, as they are not squashed and can therefore absorb sufficient water.
