Basement design – 7 tips
Nowadays, cellars are more than just storage rooms for storing all the junk that has accumulated over the years. Rather, they can be used in a versatile and efficient way. We reveal 7 tips on how to organize and use your cellar optimally – with more storage space and an ingenious organization system.
#1 Organize your cellar in the best possible way
A cellar quickly becomes cluttered if you don’t tidy it for several months or even years and more and more things keep piling up. It’s easy to lose track of things. So how can you organize the cellar optimally? Here are a few suggestions:
- introduce suitable organization systems
- Sort and clear out the cellar regularly
- Provide more light
- Use transparent storage objects with labels
- Label storage boxes so that they do not have to be taken off the shelf first
- Store correctly – light items go to the top, heavy items to the bottom and frequently used items to the front
- Clothes stored in the cellar need extra protection – moth protection or an airtight vacuum cover
#2 Create order in the cellar
In order for cellar compartments to be used efficiently, a certain basic organization is necessary first. The following points should not be ignored:
- Separate regularly used items from irregularly used items.
- Say goodbye to items that are not missing and dispose of them
- Store everything that has to do with tools, for example, in one corner of the cellar, garden accessories in another, etc.
- Make sure that there are no open spaces where things can simply be left – this will keep the cellar tidy at all times
#3 Get basic equipment
Once order has been established, well thought-out basic equipment can contribute to more efficient cellar use. It is important to note that it should ideally be made of easy-to-clean material. The basic equipment also includes containers for clearing out glass, waste paper or fabric items such as old clothes. Cleaning utensils for immediate use, such as a broom, should also be included.
#4 Set up storage systems
Once the cellar has been tidied up and organized, it needs suitable furniture, shelves and cupboards for efficient design and use. Shelving and cabinet systems are ideal for this purpose. A wall cupboard or hooks can also be of good use. A sophisticated system is then needed to store all the stored items in a clear and easily recognizable way. Labeling systems and transparent storage boxes or crates are suitable. Not forgetting that even in the cellar, everything should have its fixed place.
#5 Further subdivide basement rooms
In order to make sensible use of the cellar, further room layouts are useful. It is important to clarify in advance which subdivisions the cellar should contain:
- Storage room
- Storeroom
- Pantry
- Laundry room
- Hobby room
- Garage
- Living space
If there is not enough space, you need to think about how you can create more storage space. Bicycles can be moved to the front yard or garden, for example.
When subdividing the room, it is also important to pay attention to existing power and water connections.
#6 Create additional storage space
There are several ways to create more storage space. A wall cupboard is an excellent option. It can be used not only to store things that have no place in the home, but also objects that are inaccessible to children. Hooks can also be attached to empty walls. These are a good solution for storing skis.
#7 Maintaining order in the cellar
Once order has been established, it should be maintained. The best way to do this is to clean the cellar every few months or at least once a year. Spring cleaning also applies to the cellar! At the same time, items should be examined and sorted out if they are no longer needed or no longer usable. As a rule, you can apply this: Anything that is used less than once a year can go. Things that are too good to throw away: Sell, give away or donate.
