Beauty from the kitchen: the kitchen is not only home to delicacies for the stomach, but also for skin and hair. We present five beauty hacks that you can easily implement.
To enjoy radiant skin and healthy hair, you don’t necessarily have to reach for ready-made cosmetics. There are plenty of home remedies hiding in your fridge and kitchen cupboards that can be used alone or in combination to achieve natural beauty.
Curd cheese and yogurt
Thanks to their moisturizing and anti-inflammatory effects, both can be used for different skin types: If you want to keep it rudimentary, simply apply a layer of curd cheese or yoghurt to the face, neck and décolleté, leave it on for around ten to 15 minutes, then wash it off – and you’re done.
For dry skin, we recommend mixing curd cheese or yoghurt with honey. For blemished skin, on the other hand, the combination with lemon juice works wonders. Cucumber or bananas are also good partners for masks made from these dairy products. Yoghurt also has a reputation for helping with irritated scalps and dandruff thanks to its anti-fungal properties.
By the way: If you have a slight sunburn, apply a thin layer of both for about ten to fifteen minutes to cool the offending skin.
Face mask for dry skin:
2 tbsp curd cheese/yoghurt
2 tsp honey
Face mask for blemished skin:
2 tbsp curd cheese
1 teaspoon lemon juice
or 1 tbsp yogurt
a few drops of lemon juice
Oat flakes
The small cereal flakes, which are rich in fiber, B vitamins, iron, magnesium, calcium and zinc, are a real booster for beauty – not only from the inside, but also from the outside. This is because oats moisturize the skin, strengthen the skin barrier and have an anti-inflammatory, balancing and soothing effect. Another advantage of the hearty flakes is that they can be used in many different ways for beauty – from facial toner to a peeling to a mask.
To make the toner, the flakes are simply crushed and mixed with water in a screw-top jar. After one to two days, the oat flakes are poured off and the finished toner is poured into a bottle.
For a peeling, the oat flakes are crushed, mixed with a little water or yoghurt, honey or oil to form a paste and applied to the skin. Massage in gently, wash off – done! Depending on your skin type, the same ingredients can also be used to make masks, which should be left on for around ten to 15 minutes. However, it is advisable to crush the oat flakes a little more for this.
Facial toner
½ cup rolled oats
250 ml boiled water
1 screw-top jar
Oatmeal mask with honey and yogurt
2-3 tbsp oat flakes
1-2 tbsp yogurt
approx. 1 teaspoon honey
Olive oil
Olive oil, which nourishes the skin particularly intensively, as well as other vegetable oils such as coconut, almond or avocado oil, are perfect helpers to make your skin even more beautiful. This is because the fatty acids contained in the oils not only moisturize, but also counteract moisture loss and strengthen the skin barrier.
Olive oil, for example, is ideal for dry skin due to its high content of omega-9 fatty acids. It is also rich in olive polyphenols, which have a strong cell-protecting effect against free radicals. A ten-minute hand bath with olive or almond oil, which is slightly warmed, not only makes the skin soft and supple, but also strengthens the nails. Ideally, the oil should not be washed off at the end of the bath, but simply dabbed off.
Salt
Sea salt, which contains valuable minerals and trace elements, is another food that should not only have a place in the kitchen, but also in the bathroom. As a scrub, for example, it makes the face and body shine again. Mix sea salt with olive oil, for example, rub in carefully and rinse off.
A bath with sea salt (which can be bought in drugstores, for example) is even suitable for treating itchy and irritated skin, such as neurodermatitis. Masks, facial tonics (the salt has to dissolve first) and even mouthwashes can also be made from the white gold.
Sea salt facial toner
1 tsp sea salt
120 ml warm water
Mouthwash with sea salt
Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of water
Honey
As you’ve probably already noticed, honey is a must-have for anyone looking for do-it-yourself style cosmetics. Honey, which contains various enzymes, antioxidants and trace elements, also scores highly with its moisturizing and antibacterial properties.
It also promotes the regeneration of the skin. Applied pure to the lips, it protects them from cracking and dryness and keeps them supple. The face also benefits from the moisturizing effect: apply a thin layer of honey, leave it on for around 15 minutes and then wash it off with water.
The list could go on and on, because cucumbers, avocados, lemon, sugar, apple cider vinegar, beer, yeast, potatoes, coffee or tea can also be used to make a wide variety of beauty products quickly and cheaply.
A final tip: it is best to use your products immediately after production.
