Pets and designer furniture – how to live together peacefully?
When welcoming a new resident into your home, there are some adjustments to make to ensure a good coexistence. However, a dog or cat has much different preferences, habits and behaviors than his master or mistress. So it’s only legitimate to fear for your designer apartment furnished with expensive, delicate furniture. But it is possible to live with a dear little furball without the apartment being littered with furballs and suffering from other unsavory legacies. We’ll show you how!
Take animal perspective
It helps to squat down or get down on your knees. After all, this is the only way to see how the apartment looks for your four-legged friend. One thing is clear: Smaller objects on the ground or near the ground attract the most attention and seem like nice play partners. They must be secured or cleared away to avoid unfortunate collisions. Small parts in particular are often nibbled or swallowed. Vases that are within reach may also be at risk. So all those accessories that are made of fragile material, can be knocked over or emptied, should be put in a safe place.
House clean for a clean room
When your (young) animal friend is new to the apartment, it can take some time before he is finally housebroken. Here, however, “big business” is still the easier to eliminate. Especially the urine of cats smells very unpleasant on wooden floors or carpets. Now how to proceed to avoid soiling the entire apartment? It is advisable to separate an area of the apartment, preferably with easy-to-clean tile floor, in case of emergency with well-fixed floor protector, to accustom the newcomer to the apartment and a “box litter box”, or, if it is a dog, to the park or alley.
Favorite place
A dog is very likely to be persuaded to accept the sleeping spot you have chosen. With a cat it looks different. She is more likely to choose her own favorite places. Therefore, it is best to clear all places that might look suspiciously like a sleeping place from delicate, fragile objects. Another thing to keep in mind is the hair, which sometimes goes out – especially after a cold winter – if you have a lot of it… You can guard against this with lint rollers and hair brooms – there are now very efficient models. Best to order online and the hairy thing has itself.
Fall hazard
A roof terrace can be the undoing of a curious house cat. Some sort of cat (or even dog) barrier is recommended here. Don’t worry, there are fancy versions of these, too. This allows people and animals to enjoy the fresh air without worry. Tilted windows are also a risk if the cat tries to escape. Always keep this in mind!
Kitchen chaos
This hack is very accommodating for those who are particularly concerned about order and aesthetics in the apartment. Because the kitchen must always be spotless with pets. No dirty dishes, no leftover food, no open food wrappers – everything must be put away, well stowed and out of sight. So not only does it always look like from the home catalog in the kitchen, but you also save your little treasures from unpleasant food poisoning and stomach aches. When cooking, it’s also: animal out, door closed! This prophylactically prevents fights over food. By the way, people also like to play with pillboxes, but these should be stowed away especially well, as they could act like pure poison for the animal!
Dung buckets and poisonous plants
Plants are never a bad idea in a home. But with animal co-inhabitants, you must in any case take good care that the plants are not poisonous, because a little too curious little animals now and then come up with stupid ideas. Among the culprits are dragon tree, yucca palm, ficus Benjamin, buckthorn, azalea, coral tree, amaryllis and cup primroses, as well as wild plants such as anemone, lupine, lily of the valley, snowdrop, tree of life, yew, ivy, hyacinth and boxwood. Not to mention the poinsettia, especially popular during Advent! Cleaning out trash cans is also one of these stupid jokes. However, this not only makes a mess, but can also be very detrimental to the health of the rascals. So the right trash cans, stable and with lids, are top priority!
Quick tips
Finally, here are a few self-explanatory hacks that you should at least always have in mind:
- Place air conditioner and fan out of reach of animals!
- Make the cable inaccessible!
- Fix shelves to the wall!
- Always close washing machines and dryers!
- Always put away delicate things right away!
With these tips, you can get a little furry friend with peace of mind and if you make friends quickly, the rest will work itself out!
