In principle, we can hardly wait for summer: eating ice cream, going to the lake, sitting outside with friends. But the joy of hot summer days comes to an abrupt end at the latest when you come home to the attic apartment, which has turned into a sweltering oven during the day and prevents you from sleeping.
But there are a few tips and tricks on how to cool your attic apartment – even without air conditioning. We have selected the best ones for you:
Darkening an attic apartment
The most effective way to keep your home cool is to keep the heat out in the first place! To do this, you should close the roller shutters, shutters or blinds as soon as the sun reaches the window. They are best placed outside the window so that the pane doesn’t heat up and the room stays nice and cool. Important: During the day, keep windows closed that are exposed to direct sunlight.
Ventilate when it gets dark
If all windows are closed during the day, it is all the more important that you ventilate your home well in the evening after sunset and in the early morning. It is best to leave the windows open even at night. Especially if you want to cool an attic apartment, proper ventilation helps to combat the heat more effectively.
To ensure that the cooler air reaches all rooms as quickly as possible, you should create a draught. Caution: Secure the windows and doors so that they do not slam shut.
Tip: Also open all cupboard doors so that the heat trapped in the furniture can escape more quickly.
Cooling your home with evaporative cooling
You can benefit from evaporative cooling by using wet towels or sheets. This occurs because heat is extracted from the ambient air when the damp sheets are dried. It is best to hang the damp cloths on a clothes horse in the middle of the room you want to cool in the evening or at night with the windows open.
Clear away carpets
Carpets are heat accumulators that slowly release the heat back into the environment. It is therefore better to banish them to the cellar during the summer heat. Incidentally, this also applies to cuddly blankets on the sofa.
Cool your home with ice cubes
Fill bowls with ice water and place them in the rooms you want to cool – the ice cubes will cool the air as they melt. Tip: You can then use the melted water to water your plants.
Cooling the bedroom with plants
Speaking of plants: Houseplants not only ensure a pleasant climate, they also improve the humidity in the environment and thus cool the room. Especially in the bedroom, houseplants such as rubber tree, cob thread or indoor palm can help you sleep well at night despite the summer heat.
Take a lukewarm shower and drink
The obvious thing to do during a heatwave is to enjoy a cold shower and cool down with ice-cold drinks – but unfortunately this is exactly the wrong approach: the cold shock causes our body to start warming up in order to get back to normal temperature. We sweat more as a result! It is actually better to take lukewarm showers and lukewarm drinks. Tip: If you take a shower before going to bed, put your pyjamas in the fridge for a short while. This boost of freshness is enough to help you fall asleep.
