How do you turn a balcony, patio or garden into a cozy outdoor living room? And how can hobby gardeners without the proverbial green thumb enjoy a rich harvest and lush blooms? Answers to these questions are once again provided by various new publications on the book market this year – we present five gardening books.

The list:
1. the 100 most beautiful terraces and seating areas
Landscape planner Antje Krause shows you how to create the perfect outdoor area on your patio or in your garden. It not only provides suggestions for every taste – from rustic charm to modern elegance – but also addresses of garden and landscape architects as well as sources of supply, so that the dream of a cozy retreat in your own garden can come true.

2. greener tomorrow
Climate change presents our gardens with a variety of challenges: Temperatures are rising, rainfall is changing and new pests and diseases are finding their way into our green oases. “Morgen grüner” by Frederike Treu shows how gardens, balconies and terraces can be brought into harmony with the changes in nature. It not only provides tips on how these can be designed to be more climate-friendly, natural and sustainable, but also presents 15 private gardens as examples and inspiration. Hobby gardeners and gardening professionals share their best ideas and advice for robust and drought-tolerant plants, resource-saving watering, chemical-free fertilizing, ecological pest control, the use of natural materials and much more in this gardening book.

3. the big raised bed book
Which location and which materials are right for my raised bed? How is it built up, how is it fertilized? Doris Kampas has answers to questions like these and many others in her book. It covers everything from the location, construction and structure of the raised bed to successful mixed crops, irrigation systems, fertilization, mulch and care, right through to high-yield harvests at any time of year. Kampas also reveals how raised beds can cope with extreme weather conditions and uses more than 20 example and themed beds in her garden book to show how planting dreams can come true.

4. windowsill garden
“The smallest garden is a pot”, writes Deike Haßler in her book “Fensterbrettgarten” (Window sill garden), encouraging amateur gardeners to use this space to grow vegetables, herbs, flowers and even berries. In addition to lots of useful information, tips and tricks, hobby gardeners will also find basic know-how on planting, mixed crops, fertilizing, vertical gardening, aquaponics, mushroom cultivation and more, as well as over 30 portraits of indoor and outdoor plants that feel at home on the windowsill.

5. the garden of my father Karl Foerster
In 1911, perennial plant breeder Karl Foerster (1874-1970) began to create a perennial garden in Potsdam-Bornim. Even today, the garden, which is now a listed building, attracts fans and interested visitors from near and far every year. Marianne Foerster, who lovingly tended the flower paradise for more than two decades, guides us through the garden in her very personal diary, while a historical overview sheds light on the development of the garden, house and nursery. In this updated edition, her work as a garden designer is also presented for the first time. Her professional tips on adapting gardens to climate change or the professional pruning of perennials round off the content.
